Has Your Spa Got An Electrical Problem?
Most susspected electrical problems actually turn out to be ither a
individual component, such as a pump or heater that have caused the problem
in the first place. There is a few basic steps you can take as a spa owner
to work out roughly what your problem is.This guide is very general and
aimed at all types of spas but may not be suited to your brand of spa, so
always check your manufacturers manual first.
Has your spa been wired correctly as per the manufacturers guidelines? Has
the correct wire size been used for the total amperage draw and the
distance required? and is it on a deadicated circuit (from meter box to
spa) and a Seperate R.C.D or E.L.C.B for the spa been used? If the answer
to all these is Yes then read on, if it is No or you are unsure, then
consult with your electrician and or spa supplier to get it right first.
WARNING:Avoid fatal electric shocks! Do Not Attempt To Do Anything
More Than What Is Suggested On this Page! You Would Be Putting Yourself And
Others At Risk Of Serious Or Fatal Injury! Use Only An
Electrical Qualified Technician. And Ask
For His Or Her Licence Number If Unsure And A Certificate Of Electrical
Safety!!
1.What is your touch pad display saying?
Your touch pad (if you have a touch pad and not push down air buttons!),
should be telling you something about the type of ploblem you may have.
Most problems can be pin pointed from what is displayed on your touch pad.
a. Is your touch pad blank?
If so, check power is turned on at the power point, the safety switch under
the spa side cabinet, the isolation switch (if spa is hardwired), then the
main switch board to your house with R.C.D (Residual Current Device)and or
E.L.C.B. (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker) labeled Spa ! If all are
turned on and still no display on touch pad, is the spa working as normal
with everything going but the display is still not there? Then you have a
touch pad or connection problem, or posible software or circuitry issue.Do
not proceed any further Book A Service Call.
b. My touch pad is displaying a weird message or has flashing dots
or is flashing different colours?
Your touch pad is probably trying to tell you something! Check your owners
manual, under touch pad error codes or have a look here:
Touch Pad Error Codes .Sometimes though weird
things can be displayed due to a low voltage supply situation, which is
usually more common in Rural or Semi-Rural areas.
c. I do not have a touch pad, I have push down air
buttons!
If You have push down air buttons and when you push it the pump or blower
does not work, it will be one of four problems!
1. The air button itself that you are pushing.
2. The air line which goes from the air button you are pushing to the air
switch.
3. The air switch or air switch sensor, which may be in a seperate box or
maybe located withen the blower or pump casing itself.
4. The actual pump or blower or light/light transformer themselves.
You can try and locate where the air tube connects onto the the air sensor
nipple, pull off the tube and use a drinking straw to put over the nipple
and blow into it to see if it is just a air button or air line problem
only. It is common for older spas that the airline is perished due to the
U.V. rays of the sun and becomes brital and breaks. The other thing you can
do is by-pass the air switch and disconnect the power lead for the
pump, blower, light from the air switch box and plug dirrectly into a working
power point, to see if it works when the air switch is not used.
2. My Touch Pad Is Working But My Blower, Pump Two, Pump One High
Speed, Heater Or Light Is Not?
You will have a central controller box that all these components plug
into.Turn Power OFF. Check to see if all the plugs are securely in place
and have not vibrated loose. Plug in properly and check to see thay make
good connection. Turn power back ON.
If it is still not working, you can try (after turning power off), Having a
look at the particular component connection at your controller box, such as
the blower! Disconnect it and plug it into a seperate power point, you may
have to use an extention lead from another power point! If it works, you
will know its a controller box or touch pad issue.
Book A Service Call. If it doesnt work you know
that it is THAT individual component that is faulty! You may have
conections on your controller box that are not normal plugs! If this is the
case you will need our Technicians to come and test it!
3. My Spa pump turns on but only makes a humming noise and no water
comes out from the jets?
Spa Bath/Spa Pool : If this is the problem with your spa
bath, nine times out of ten the pump has been installed incorrectley and is
trying to prime but cant! You can try:
1. If it is a spa bath,Fill the bath right up to the top
and see if it then primes. If it is a spa pool, make sure
the water level is at correct height and there is no obstruction in the
filter canistor, or dirty filters. You could try taking the filter
cartridges right out and then trying the pump. If that works make sure you
clean and or replace cartridges as soon as possible.
2. Turn the pump on and off every 5 seconds, because often the surge of the
pump starting primes the pump. If it is a spa pool and you have recentley
emptied and or just filled it up, it will most probably be a priming issue
and may require you to bleed the air out of the system. As per
Priming The Pump .For spa baths, where this is
often impracticle there are such available items as inline bleed valves!
which are easly attatched to the return line of a pump and let all the air
out of the line, then stop when the water comes through.
3. It is possible however that your pump relay/circuit/capacitor or
controller system is stopping your pump from comming on and will still not
start regardless and it also could be that the mechanical seal has gone and
water has penetrated down the shaft and into the bearings and has seazed
your motor. At this stage you would need to Boook A
Service Call.
4. My Spa Heater Does Not Work?
My Pump is running and my touch says that it is heating but the heat has
not gone up in hours? It takes about 8 to 13 hours for some electric
heaters to heat a portable spa from tap water cold to hot, so make sure you
have allowed time start off with and your air controls are turned off and
your hard cover on!. If it is still not heating after that, or is dropping
in temperature with the heat light or indicater still on, then you have a
problem. It maybe a fuse, element or another problem,

5. The power Trips out?
1.Does the power trip out instantly and wont let you switch it back on? If
so it is most likey a problem with the circuit board or components on or
reated to the circuit board like fuses or transformers.

2. Does The power trip out after a certain time? The first thing that
starts in a portable spa controller box is usaully the transformer and the
circuit board, so if your touch pad lights up and starts, and then your
pump may even start, then the power trips out. It is quite likely to be
your heater. This is because your pump has to start first and push water
through your heater before the heater will switch
on.Book a service call
3. Does The power trip out only at the start of a filter cycle? Most
controller systems have filter or purge cycles that come on by them selves
once or twice a day. Most of theses cycles starts all the pumps, including
the blower and if you have a ozone that is sometimes started as well. So it
is likely to be one of those components that only come on during the filter
cycle, that is tripping your power out.Book a
